The only tax I like!
What a fantastic idea!
Australian online retailer kogan.com has introduced the world’s first “tax” on Microsoft’s out of date browser Internet Explorer 7 (IE7).
Customers who purchase on their site using IE7 will have to pay an extra surcharge on purchases made through the firm’s site.
The charge is very nicely worked out at 6.8%… 0.1% for every month since IE7 launched in 2006.
According to Mr Kogan the idea was born when then company started working on a site relaunch. Research showed that only 3% of it’s customers used the out of date browser however, it’s IT team had become too pre-occupied on adapting the pages to display properly on IE7.
“I was constantly on the line to my web team. The amount of work and effort involved in making our website look normal in IE7 equalled the combined time of designing for Chrome, Safari and Firefox.”
Mr Kogan has said that it would be unlikely that anyone would actually pay the “tax” however, his goal is to encourage users to download a more up-to-date version of Internet Explorer… or in my opinion use a different browser all together!
A lot of praise has been sent to Mr Kogan for his efforts.
So, if you’re running an old browser update it! Not only will you benefit from features and boosts in speed, but it may also save you a lot of money!
